Rainin Careers And Employment, Ranin

About Rainin

Mettler-Toledo International would like you to weigh things carefully. The company makes weighing and analytical instruments for the industrial, laboratory, and food retail sectors. Products include bench and floor scales, transportation and logistics data capture, laboratory balances, automated chemistry solutions, process analytics, software, and – more. more. The company also makes products for the retail grocery industry, including labeling systems, checkout scanner scales, receiving scales, and data management software. Nearly two-thirds of Mettler-Toledo's sales come from outside Europe, a third from emerging markets, including China at more than 15% of overall sales.

The company balances its operations across a diverse geographical and product base that provides the company with a leading position in many of its markets. Mettler-Toledo's broad customer base is spread across the electronics, food retailing, laboratory, pharmaceutical, precious metals, and transportation markets, among others. Europe may account for the most sales, at more than a third, but the US is by far the largest single-country contributor at more than a quarter of sales (China is second). The emerging markets for Mettler-Toledo are Africa, Asia (excluding Japan), Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Sales have recovered after a 12% drop in 2009. The company has even grown its growth, following the 13% rise in 2010 with 17% revenue improvement in 2011. Almost every region followed suit, with only home country Switzerland missing out in 2010 before rebounding the following year. Mettler-Toledo's focus on China has produced a more than 65% increase from 2009 to 2011. That was its largest geographic growth, but most countries still experienced strong double digit climbs. The Americas ticked up nearly 10%, Europe nearly 20%, while Asia and other regions produced the largest growth at more than 25%. By product type, its laboratory and industrial related products now equally divide up 90% of sales, but industrial products grew a heftier, nearly 25% compared to laboratory products' nearly 15% growth.

Mettler-Toledo's earlier growth was fueled by acquisitions, and it continues to seek strategic fits to bring into the fold. It considers the life sciences, product inspection, and process analytics sectors as its main areas of focus for acquisitions. In 2011 it bought a US-based x-ray inspection business and Germany-based vision inspection operations that it tucked into its product inspection systems portfolio. In 2010 Mettler-Toledo bought its pipette distributor in the UK, and the year prior it acquired a US-based vision inspection technology. The company's growth strategy also includes gaining market share, expanding in emerging markets, extending its technology leadership, maintaining cost discipline, and pursuing strategic acquisitions.

Mettler-Toledo also offers services, such as calibration, certification, repairs, and spare parts supply. In a down year like 2009, services make up more of the company's annual revenues (coming in at a quarter of sales in 2009) as product sales decline, particularly in weighing systems. It keeps its service revenues growing (14% from 2009 to 2011) by offering value-added services, such as regulatory compliance.

Mettler-Toledo's manufacturing occurs substantially at facilities in China, Germany, Switzerland, the UK, and the US, with laboratory products made primarily in Switzerland, but also supported in the US and China. – less

Cloisonné: Chinese Enamels from the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties (Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design & Culture)

Description

Béatrice Quette is head of education at the Musée des arts décoratifs, Paris.

Product Description

The technique of applying brilliant enamel ornament to metalwork, known as cloisonné, reached its peak in China from the fourteenth century on. This sumptuously illustrated survey, which accompanies an exhibition at the Bard Graduate Center, situates these remarkable pieces in their context with a survey of the historical, political and sociological milieu in China during the period. Research recently undertaken in China and published here for the first time has resulted in the redating of a number of objects with significant implications for the overview of Chinese cloisonné production. Shapes, functions, pattern, and symbolism in cloisonné objects are all examined and explored. And the final section of the book reviews the impact of developments in China on later production in Europe, as well as the acquisition of cloisonné pieces by the major American museums and private collectors at the beginning of the twentieth century.

About this item

Bronsted Acids And Bases, Acidor

For more than 300 years, substances that behaved like vinegar have been classified as acids . while those that have properties like the ash from a wood fire have been called alkalies or bases . The name "acid" comes from the Latin acidus . which means "sour," and refers to the sharp odor and sour taste of many acids. Vinegar tastes sour because it is a dilute solution of acetic acid in water; lemon juice is sour because it contains citric acid; milk turns sour when it spoils because of the formation of lactic acid; and the sour odor of rotten meat can be attributed to carboxylic acids such as butyric acid formed when fat spoils.

Today, when chemists use the words "acid" or "base" they refer to a model developed independently by Brønsted, Lowry, and Bjerrum. Since the most explicit statement of this theory was contained in the writings of Brønsted, it is most commonly known as the "Brønsted acid-base" theory.

Brønsted Acid-Base Theory

Brønsted argued that all acid-base reactions involve the transfer of an H + ion, or proton. Water reacts with itself, for example, by transferring an H + ion from one molecule to another to form an H 3 O + ion and an OH - ion.

According to this theory, an acid is a "proton donor" and a base is a "proton acceptor."

Acids are often divided into categories such as "strong" and "weak." One measure of the strength of an acid is the acid-dissociation equilibrium constant . K a . for that acid.

When K a is relatively large, we have a strong acid.

When it is small, we have a weak acid.

When it is very small, we have a very weak acid.

In 1909, S. P. L. Sørenson suggested that the enormous range of concentrations of the H 3 O + and OH - ions in aqueous solutions could be compressed into a more manageable set of data by taking advantage of logarithmic mathematics and calculating the pH or pOH of the solution.

The "p" in pH and pOH is an operator that indicates that the negative of the logarithm should be calculated for any quantity to which it is attached. Thus, pK a is the negative of the logarithm of the acid-dissociation equilibrium constant.

The only disadvantage of using pK a as a measure of the relative strengths of acids is the fact that large numbers now describe weak acids, and small (negative) numbers describe strong acids.

An important features of the Brønsted theory is the relationship it creates between acids and bases. Every Brønsted acid has a conjugate base, and vice versa.

Just as the magnitude of K a is a measure of the strength of an acid, the value of K b reflects the strength of its conjugate base. Consider what happens when we multiply the K a expression for a generic acid (HA) by the K b expression for its conjugate base (A - ).

If we now replace each term in this equation by the appropriate equilibrium constant, we get the following equation.

Because the product of K a times K b is a relatively small number, either the acid or its conjugate base can be "strong." But if one is strong, the other must be weak. Thus, a strong acid must have a weak conjugate base.

A strong base, on the other hand, must have a weak conjugate acid.

Brønsted Acids and Bases in Nonaqueous Solutions

Water has a limiting effect on the strength of acids and bases. All strong acids behave the same in water -- 1 M solutions of the strong acids all behave as 1 M solutions of the H 3 O + ion -- and very weak acids cannot act as acids in water. Acid-base reactions don't have to occur in water, however. When other solvents are used, the full range of acid-base strength shown in the following table can be observed.

Typical Brønsted Acids and Their Conjugate Bases
